ARIA allergic rhinitis classification

Classifies allergic rhinitis on two axes, duration (intermittent vs persistent) and severity (mild vs moderate-severe).

Formula / logic

Duration, intermittent: symptoms <4 days/week OR <4 consecutive weeks; persistent: ≥4 days/week AND ≥4 consecutive weeks. Severity, mild: none of {abnormal sleep, impairment of daily activities/leisure/sport, impairment of school/work, troublesome symptoms}; moderate-severe: ≥1 present.

Interpretation

The ARIA duration/severity grid replaced the older seasonal/perennial split and guides a stepwise treatment ladder.
